Club Christmas Handicap, Bedford Embankment, Sunday 18 December 2016

If were walking along the embankment between 11:00 and 11:30 am on Sunday, you may have seen runners of all ages and sizes running in both directions They included Mexicans, elves, Santas and reindeer but the  surprising feature was that all were wearing droopy black moustaches.

The race was the 36th Bedford & County Annual Christmas Handicap race. This year the event was was a special one as it was held in honour of the memory of Club Legend Pete Dancer who passed away earlier this year. Pete is sadly missed by all his friends at the club and was a great supporter of the event. He ran in the first 34 races and only missed last year's race due to the onset of his illness.

The race is held over a 3.0 mile course and runners are sent off at intervals determined by the handicapper. The slowest runners go off first and the fastest ones last.

The handicapper tries to ensure that the whole field closes up in the latter stages of the race and ideally with everyone finishing at the same time.

A field of 49 mustachioed runners and walkers toed the line. Some of the older and less fit club members were just taking part for Pete. Others, including GB internationals Jack Goodwin and Rebecca Murray were wearing fancy dress and just running round at a relatively steady pace. And yet some; ranging in age from 11 to 70 years of age; were determined to run flat out in order to try to capture the club’s most prestigious prize of the year and be declared winner of the 2016 Bedford & County Christmas Handicap.

This year the winner was Mick Russell whose 66 year-old legs propelled him to a time of 21:51, hanging on for a sweet victory from the rapidly closing youngsters. Mick became the first recipient of the Pete Dancer Memorial Trophy  and this was presented to him by Pete's wife Joy Dancer. Mick also won the winner's picture; painted 10 years ago by Steve Herring; featuring Pete as a Mexican with his famous moustache.

The first lady in 7th place was Emma Coombes in 24:08.

The best male fancy dress cup, a Chrismas mug, went to Craig Emmerson (a reindeer) and the best female fancy dress went surprisingly to Howard Darbon who dressed as a pink fairy! The wooden spoon for last male finisher went to young Ed Carpenter who was following in his father footsteps, Pete Carpenter already has a large spoon collection of his own. The last lady wooden spoon was awarded to a former winner of the race Annette Shotbolt. The fastest lap of the day went to Matt Janes who recorded 14:57 almost a minute down on his best of 14:01 from 2007. The fastest lady was last week's European Cross Country Gold medallist, Rebecca Murray with 18:30. There were some other performances of note; 14 year old Gregory Herring recorded a superb 16:48, but was still outdone by his dad Steve, who set a new over 50's record of 16:03.
